Sherlock 2014-2022
Sherlock was a great beauty of a cat, with the personality to match
Sherlock and his littermate, Watson, came in as bottle babies - pulled off a porch in a bad apartment complex situation. They were only a few days old. We bottle fed them along with 5 more babies that came in a few days later. Sherlock developed some severe gastric issues including an abdominal wall hernia and early mega colon, so we made the call that he would stay. He and his brother were very bonded, so we decided not to separate them. Sherlock decided at an early age that he had no idea what dry food was. This was only to his benefit with his gastric issues, so no complaints there!
Sherlock grew to be one of the most strikingly beautiful cats we have ever had here at the Commune. He had a big classic tabby swirl on his side in a deep, rich black on a shiny, silver grey. Then he had the brightest white legs and face markings. He was simply gorgeous.
He had a personality to match, too! He was bossy, sweet, and wonderful in every way. He never met a stranger and was always good for some purr therapy. He loved the outdoors and could be found in the enclosure far more often than not. He was even friendly with his housemates! We could not ask for a more wonderful cat.
On April 6, 2022, Sherlock started having serious trouble breathing. This is never a good sign. We rushed him up to the vet where they had to put him on oxygen just to examine him, and sedate him just to keep him from panicking because he couldn’t breathe. She felt a large mass in his throat. She took an x-ray and saw that it was blocking his breathing. She took a few cells from it and found out it was thyroid cancer. This is something where an operation has a minimal survival rate, and with the size of his, even lower. We decided the most humane choice would be to let him go. Matt and I were right there with him as he crossed over.
Sherlock, sweet boy, We hand raised you from the time you were a few days old. You were very special to us, and we will miss you terribly. - Mama and Daddy
